Essex Under 9s qualify for finals
Team Manager Michael Catabay reports:-
On Saturday 16th March 2019 the Essex Under 9 team competed with 6 other teams in the EPSCA East Zone Qualifying event. As expected, the East Zone is always a very tough and challenging area from which to qualify for the final. We had a very good start of the day when all the players arrived at the venue in good time, which gave us extra time to get to know each other and settle down.
In round 1, the team scored 4 ½ points with the wins coming mostly from the top board; it was a great way for Harry, Max and the rest to show a kind of leadership towards the lower boards.
In round 2, the games were getting more difficult when most of the players were being outplayed. Essex only picked up 2½ points in this round, and it was at this point where I had to pause and find a way to get the team back in the game.
So, before the start of round 3 the players were gathered and some words of advice were said. As the end of the last round approached, one after the other the players were picking up points. The games from the last round that the Essex players played were all beautiful to watch. In the last round the team scored a wonderful 6½ points, giving a total of 13½ points and just qualifying for the Finals by half a point above Cambridge.
Looking at how the day unfolded, it was such a great experience for everyone involved. I want to thank all that have contributed in any way to get this team to the Finals, especially our very own IM Richard Pert who has always been there to help.
I am very proud of all the players; see you all at the Finals.
